The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
