Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such medications must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
