The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
