British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
