The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist a binding element holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he admitted that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.
Matteo's Unexpected Presence
One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.
He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His True Position
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
